With a commanding presence by the waterfront, the Civic Centre, situated on Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos is an exceptional architectural piece. Sited on a small plot of land, its inverted structure became inevitable as successive floors from ground to top were required to provide more accommodation.
The client desired the reception on the ground floor, the event centre on middle floor while seminar rooms and offices were to be situated on the top floor.
In order not to obstruct views in the big hall, it had to be column free and so the James Cubitt Architects design suspends the floor from above, by the use of a huge, iconic truss designed to provide cable suspension of the floor above the events space
